Graphic Design
Program Modules:
Drawing & Design Studio
Students will study traditional sketching and drawing techniques, 2D/3D representation and conventions; color theory, graphical layout and design principles.
Basic Theory
Students will study colour theory, graphical layout, and design principles.
Media Presentation
Students will be taught how to plan, design, build, and add graphics and multimedia effects to create high-powered digital presentations.
Digital Imaging
The students will be introduced to layout and design principles, typography and they will be taught beginner through advanced levels of digital image manipulation techniques using Adobe Suite. The final project visually tells a story through photomontage.
Desktop Layout Publishing
Students will be introduced to the principles of desktop publishing and design. They will be taught the processes required by industry professionals to create content for commercial printers. An exploration of the research, development and modes of creative expression in various areas of design, with particular emphasis on digital output, screen-printing, offset printing and specialized printing processes.
Digital Photography
Students will learn how to use their digital camera and take better pictures. Learning camera controls and creativity, such as sharpness, exposure, light and color. We will also explore close-up photography and nature photography.
Design History & Theory
Students will be taught how to plan, design, build, and add graphics and multimedia effects to create high-powered digital presentations.
Marketing
An introduction to the techniques of branding through advertising such as visual corporate identity, packaging design and ad campaigns. McKenzie College brings in real world clients (non-profit organizations) which gives the students the experience of meeting real clients, and to utilize all the knowledge and skill they have acquires.
Packaging & Design
Students learn how to apply design principles and techniques to create product identities and packaging for marketing and promotion.
Publicity Campaign
Students learn how to apply design principles and visual communication techniques to publicize an event or marketing campaign.
Portfolio Design & Exhibits
Students learn to organize, structure, prepare and effectively present a portfolio.
3-D Modeling
An introduction to 3D digital modeling techniques (e.g. lighting, use of cameras, materials, texture mapping, and staging) using current 3D applications. Students complete a final project in which they create a 3D environment that includes animated objects and camera views.
Web Design & Implementation
Students learn to design and prepare graphics for Web pages using WYSIWYG authoring and digital imaging software.
Flash Basic
Students learn introduction to advanced levels of interactive authoring using Macromedia Flash MS. The students complete three distinct projects that increase in complexity and include an interactive advertisement for the web.
Software
Software suites include up to date versions of: Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Mac Office, Adobe Acrobat, Flash and Dreamweaver, Strata 3D; and numerous other utilities and support packages.
Hardware
McKenzie College provides new MacBook wireless laptops to students that allow mobility and flexibility in the learning environment. Upon completion of the Program, the student can keep the laptop to use for their new workplace.
