Visual Arts Foundation

Program Modules:

Drawing Fundamentals

Students are introduced to concepts in creating realistic and creative drawings focusing on the theory involving edges, shading, backgrounds, one, two and three point perspective in a variety of exercises and projects.

Advanced Drawing

Students will further develop their drawing skills with studio projects that develop their ability to “see”. Study of proportion, scale and proximity are incorporated in the projects to show realism and illusion. 

Color Theory

Students will study how the mind perceives color and how to visually communicate feeling through the use of color.  A variety of techniques using and creating a color wheel, primary, secondary and complementary colors will be explored. Use of basic mediums and mixed media will be incorporated in the projects. 

Art History

Students will be exposed to significant art periods and prominent artists from the Renaissance Period to Modern and Contemporary art through each exploration of different mediums.  Learning will be reference based, while discussions of regional artists and workshops with producing artists will enrich the learning experience.

Visual Design

Students will be introduced to creative consciousness and visual literacy.  They will be instructed on novice to intermediate levels of layout and manipulation techniques. Students will also learn how to compose drawings in a creative fashion. 

Storyboarding

Students learn how to take a story from script to storyboard, with particular emphasis paid to story structure and the development of character personalities.  Critical review of film and video projects, including animation, music videos and television advertising, will be used to better help the students understand how to “tell a story” and effectively communicate a message.  Storyboarding will include key frames, backgrounds, character development and expression.

Character Animation

Students learn how to create realistic, fluid motion in a visual environment through effective use of body language, movement, posing and facial expression.

Classical Animation I – Animation Drawing

Students learn how to create animation drawings using techniques such as stretch and squash, arcs, and paths of action.  They will digitally capture and process these drawings into movies.

Life Drawing

Students learn how to incorporate structure, form, mass, volume, shading and gesture to create life-like human and animal life forms.

Studio Projects

Self-directed studio time is needed for completion of various drawing, art and design assignments and projects.  Students will be expected to participate in a combination of class and studio time.  The instructor will also act as mentor and critic in order to challenge a student’s capacity for growth.
