This Academic English Program is a full-time IELTS test preparation course for students at the Intermediate level or above.
IELTS, the International English Language Testing System, is a comprehensive test of English language proficiency designed to assess the ability of non-native speakers. It is an internationally owned and globally recognized direct English language assessment that is readily available throughout the world.

IELTS is a dependable, practical and valid English language assessment primarily used by those seeking international education, professional recognition, benchmarking to international standards and global mobility. IELTS is one of the most respected English language exams.
IELTS exams are held every month in provinces across Canada and are easily accessible.  This test is accepted and recognized internationally and is, in many cases, the ‘test of choice’ for many institutes.  Over 6000 institutions in over 135 countries recognize it!
We can assist you to register for the exam.

Each module of the exam is graded separately as a ‘Band Score’. The module scores are added together to provide an overall Band Score. Band scores range from 1 (non user) to 9 (expert user). Most universities and colleges in Canada will require a 6 to 6.5 Band Score to be granted entry to their programs.
This program prepares the student for all aspects of the IELTS examination – reading, writing, listening and speaking.  Students will develop techniques and strategies for achieving the best possible results.
Currently, these intensive preparation classes run 3 times a year, beginning in January, May and September. It is possible for students to begin in another program and then transfer to the IELTS preparation course.  It is also possible to continue studying at McKenzie College after the completion of the course in another program.
Students must commit themselves to 12 weeks of full-time contact hours in this program.  Classes are held from 9am to 12pm and from 1:15-3:15 Monday to Friday.  There will also be an advisor present for afterschool study or for extra guidance.
This course requires full dedication from our students and there will be homework distributed daily.
All students must be tested at McKenzie College prior to entry into the course.  If you have a previous IELTS score or can prove Intermediate Level equivalency prior to enrollment, you may be exempt from our in-house testing.
It is advisable to study our English for Academic program and English Skills Study Program prior to entry.
Throughout this course, students will learn skills of note taking, reading strategies, writing academic essays, listening for specific information, advanced grammar, vocabulary expansion and retention, and tools for getting the best score possible on these tests.  Students will participate in a minimum of 6 practice tests and will have the opportunity to learn from highly trained teachers.
