Visual Arts Foundation

Certificate, 8 Months

September 2026

Elevate your craft and refine your creative edge. The Visual Arts Foundation program at McKenzie College is an intensive, eight-month certificate designed for dedicated artists and designers looking to master advanced techniques and maximize their creative potential. Far from a beginner's course, this program drops you into a high-energy, collaborative studio environment where you will experiment with diverse media, challenge your artistic boundaries, and push your technical skills to a professional standard.

The heart of this program is rigorous, hands-on execution. Through complex, real-world creative projects, you will hone the critical thinking, conceptual depth, and tight time-management skills required by today’s design industries. A central focus of your time here will be curating and building an extensive, competitive fine art portfolio. For students looking to move into McKenzie's specialized diploma programs, this exceptional portfolio serves as a vital prerequisite for the competitive application process.

Graduating from the Foundation program opens major pathways across the entire creative sector, preparing you for future success in game design, animation, marketing, advertising, and the fine arts. While it is a required stepping stone for several of our advanced diplomas, please note that entry into those programs remains competitive and is not guaranteed. Additionally, if your sights are set specifically on our Visual Communication Design program (Graphic Design, Photography & Marketing), you can dive straight into that major, as this foundation program is not a prerequisite for it. No matter your ultimate goal, this eight-month intensive delivers the sophisticated artistic foundation needed to stand out.
